Chiung-Ying Cheng majored in Composition at the Department of Music, National Taiwan Normal University, and holds both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York and Northwestern University in the United States.

She has received numerous accolades, including prizes in both the Composition and Piano categories at Taiwan’s National Student Music Competition, the Lucy P. Cantrell Piano Award, and the Steinway Society Outstanding Performer Award in the United States. As a soloist, she has performed at venues such as the Chicago Cultural Center, Sherwood Conservatory of Music, and the Washington Library 

In 1990, Dr. Cheng co-founded the Cheng & Kwak Piano Duo, which was selected as one of the representatives of the United States at the Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition in 1993 and was awarded Third Prize at the Tokyo International Duo Piano Competition in 1994.

In addition to being represented by a professional concert management agency, the Cheng & Kwak Piano Duo has also performed extensively throughout the United States—including cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and Washington, D.C.—as well as in South Korea and Taiwan. In 1997, the duo released a recording under the auspices of their alma mater, Northwestern University.

Upon returning to Taiwan, Dr. Cheng held teaching positions at National Hsinchu University of Education and Fu Jen Catholic University. She has presented numerous solo and duo recitals at prominent venues, including the National Concert Hall, National Recital Hall, Hsinchu Performing Arts Center, Taichung Chung Shan Hall, Yuanlin Performing Arts Center, as well as various locations in Illinois and Missouri, USA.

In 2014, she founded the ensemble Piano Equation at the Graduate Institute of Music, National Hsinchu University of Education—an ensemble composed of both graduate and undergraduate students majoring or minoring in piano performance.
