Shih-Yu Chuang

Shih-Yu Chuang, associate professor, received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree (in piano performance) and Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota and Bachelor of Arts degree from Tunghai University. She studied piano from Professor Lydia Artymiw (the third place winner of 1978 Leeds International Piano Competition, one of the outstanding students of maestro Gary Graffman), Paul Freed, David Uerkvitz, Chia-Hui Ai, San-Ching Chang (harpsichord). Chuang studied chamber music with Professor Tanya Remenikova the cellist. Chuang gave solo recitals as well as chamber music recitals while studying in Minnesota. She was granted scholarships from the University of Minnesota, special grants from Schubert Club, and first place winner in piano concerto competition in Tunghai University .

As a full time piano faculty member, Chuang appeared as a soloist with the orchestra of National Hsinchu University of Education (NHCUE) in Hsinchu and Chiayi. She also performed chamber music with NHCUE faculty members in Taipei, Tainan , Hsinchu, and Taichung. Recently her performance included chamber music recitals in the series of the first and the second International Taiwan Hakka Arts and Cultural Festival held in 2013 and 2014 respectively, and as an accompanist with Canadian tenor Derek Kwan in 2013.

Besides piano lessons, Chuang offers Piano Repertoire of Classic Period: Survey and Performance Practice and Piano Repertoire of Romantic Period: Survey and Performance Practice in graduate level; Piano Literature in undergraduate level.
